On our second day in Sydney we got up bright and early and headed over to the infamous Bondi Beach. All the locals go on about how it’s just full of tourists, and how the Northern beaches are much nicer, but I think it deserves it’s iconic status. Just look - it’s fantastic! We weren’t there to sunbathe with the other posers though… we were there to surf! We donned our bright red ‘Learner’ rash vests and dragged our boards along the beach to the surfers section. First up was a bit of ’surf theory’ - learning how to spot the best waves and avoid the dangerous rips… I was pretty keen not to be the next drowning tourist on Bondi Rescue! After a few dry runs on the beach we were out in the surf trying to catch some waves. We were wise to choose the early session, as the water was quite empty, and there weren’t too many collisions… by the afternoon it was beginner-surfer-soup out there. I don’t think I’m a natural surfer - I managed to stand up a couple of times, but only long enough for an elaborate wobble before wiping out! I have no idea how surfers do it! It was hard enough trying to jump on the board without falling straight off the other side, and I kept getting dragged off my feet just trying to get my board back out into the surf! It was really fun, but I think I’ll stick to playing under the water, rather than trying to stand on it for now!
After battling the surf for a couple of hours we were happy to chill on the beach for a while (in my jumper, still freezing!) and watch real surfers from a cafe or two. In the afternoon we walked the coastal path from the stunning icebergs pool round to the next bay. The views are just amazing!More Bondi
