This photo I took (in Townsville) has been selected for Flickr333!To celebrate Flickr’s third birthday, they are holding a charity auction of Flickr members photographs. Mine is one of just 20 photos which are going to be printed, matted, framed and auctioned at a gallery in San Francisco next Saturday. Proceeds are going to the Kids With Cameras charity, which I think is absolutely fab.How totally and utterly exciting! I’m thrilled to have been selected alongside such amazing photographers. Yay!

I’m all moved in! It rained of course. Fortunately I haven’t managed to accumulate too much stuff yet, and there was no fish tank to contend with. A queen size bed was a bit of a challenge, but a friend of a friend had a Ute I could borrow. The house is fab. It’s a proper old wooden ‘queenslander’ house, much more eco-friendly in the tropics than these new-fangled brick houses which need the air-con running all day. It has loads of character, wooden floorboards (and walls!) throughout and a little verandah at the front which is kept cool and shady by the trees. It’s been recently done up too, brand new bathroom, new roof and re-painted inside and out, so isn’t quite as ‘quirky’ as some of the other old houses I’ve lived in! Only downside so far is that the mozzies get in and I’m being munched. Buying a mosquito net for my bed is on the list of Things To Do tomorrow. The address to send cards, letters, bourbon biscuits etc to is:37 Clayton StreetHermit ParkQLD 4812AUSTRALIAYou can look it up on Google Earth now Dad!

Eek, it’s been ages since I last updated this! I’ve been busy house hunting again, grrrrr. I seem to attract nightmare landlords. This lot spent ages trying to persuade us to sign a 12 month contract, then announced they had put the house up for sale instead, giving us hardly any time to move out! It’s the first week of university semester, so the housing market is busy, but most of the rooms up for grabs either specified undergrad students (24 is old and past it apparently! This is the first time I’ve ever been too old for something I think), or are married couples with 3 year olds looking to let a spare room. Not ideal! So anyway I’ve kind of lucked out finding this place. I haven’t moved yet, but am collecting keys tomorrow. It’s pricey, but worth it hopefully. I’ll be sharing with the guy who owns it, who has just finished his PhD and is now lecturing in marine biol at the Uni. Its a proper old wooden ‘Queenslander’ house, with a little verandah and lots of character. Anyway I’ll let you know more when I’ve moved in.I’m now celebrating with home made brownies and a glass of wine
Tomorrow I have to work out how to move all my stuff and my bed without a car!
Slight break from torrential rain today, but more forcast for the rest of the week. Recieved a leaflet entitled “Cyclones are destructive and inevitable”. Potential cyclone developing off northeast coast. Supermarkets replacing food with signs that say “sorry we have no food, road still closed”. Next town along is only accessible by boat. Drivers advised not to wade through water due to crocodiles. Send wellies, milk, bourbon biscuits.
I have never seen rain like this! There’s been no let up in days, and apparently it’s set to continue into next week. I took this photo in the morning, by lunchtime it was all dark and thundering down with rain - a little how I imagine the end of the world might look.I foolishly tried to get in to uni again. After having soggy feet all day yesterday cos my boots leaked, today I went with rolled up jeans and flipflops… but by the time I got to my office I was soaked through up to my knees and pretty damp above that! All of the pathways are several inches deep in water, and they’ve had to close the main road through campus because the stream that flows under it is now a river that flows over it. Wading birds are moving in. At 2.30 we all got an e-mail telling us to ‘go home before the roads get any more flooded’.Soooo… I’m kick-starting the Yellow-Welly-Appeal! Help me get some wellys so I can leave the house before I run out of food! All donations gratefully received, no matter how big or small
Update: Friday night, still raining…
Yellow Wellies, originally uploaded by Kenners. [ blogged from flickr ]It’s been raining non-stop for two days now, and raining hard! First the river filled up and starting pouring over the weir, then lots of streams appeared around campus (I always wondered why there were so many bridges) and now our road is flowing! I made it to uni yesterday on the bus, but still looked as though I’d swum in. Now it seems I’m going to be marooned on my bed until someone buys me some lovely yellow hunter wellies.Does anyone have a number for Noah?
Becks is a marine ecology PhD student, living in Queensland (Australia), Dumaguete (Philippines) and London (UK). Marinegirl is her online alter-ego. She dreamt her up as as super-gorgeous superhero saving the underwater world (if you've seen Captain Planet, you get the idea). She is not, and never will be, in the marines.
