Just a quicke becuase internet here is rubbish! I’m currently ‘on location’ again, helping out Garry’s (my supervisor) other PhD students Rich and Dave doing some fieldwork in the Keppel Islands for a couple of weeks. We’re living in a little beach house on Great Keppel Island, which is absolutely goregous. Great big white sand beaches, lovely blue water and lots of fun wildlife - possums at night and lizards during the day. There’s a little resort with shops for everything we need, but it’s pretty quiet at this time of year, apart from today (saturday) when all the weekenders have just landed! People keep asking me if I’m here backpacking, and it’s great to reply ‘nah, I’m here on business’ :)It’s all pretty laid back at the moment - we’re looking for coral trout spawning aggregations, which don’t form till late afternoon / evening, so I have the mornings free to laze on the beach and browse the ripcurl shop (I need a sunhat and a rash vest, honest!). We did a couple of dives yesterday, but didn’t find what we were looking for. I did see some nice fish though, and a green turtle nearly as big as me! Next week we need to collect some DNA samples, so apparently I need to learn how to use a spear gun… eek!Anyway, I’ll let you all know how we get on and will put some photos up when I can! Hope everyone’s well,Becks x
Becks is a marine ecology PhD student, living in Queensland (Australia), Dumaguete (Philippines) and London (UK). Marinegirl is her online alter-ego. She dreamt her up as as super-gorgeous superhero saving the underwater world (if you've seen Captain Planet, you get the idea). She is not, and never will be, in the marines.
